Film Fixers in Thailand: Locations, Permits and Shoot-Day Support

Jurassic World filming location in Thailand featuring dramatic limestone cliffs and tropical landscapes

A cinematic view of Thailand’s iconic limestone formations and lush tropical terrain, famously used as a filming location for the Jurassic World franchise and other international productions, representing Southeast Asia’s appeal as a high-impact natural execution corridor for global filmmaking.

Film fixers in Thailand coordinate the practical requirements of a visiting production: location recce, access, local crew, transport and daily shoot logistics. Global Producers arranges fixing support against the agreed brief, with filming applications handled through a Thailand Film Office-registered local coordinator. For overall budget, schedule and vendor-contract management, see our line producer Thailand service.

Film Fixer in Thailand: Location Recce and Access

A film fixer in Thailand starts with the brief and returns options that can actually be used. For each location the recce report records who controls the site, whether consent is realistic in the time available, the practical restrictions (hours, crew numbers, vehicle access, noise, drones), what the site sounds and looks like at the planned hour, where a unit can load, park and hold, and the nearest workable alternative if the first choice falls through. Site owners and managers are contacted, access terms are documented, and the conditions are written into the plan rather than discovered on the day.

Beaches, temple grounds, old-city streets and working markets require site-specific access checks, since each has a controlling party with its own conditions. The value of the recce is as much in the alternative as in the first choice.

Filming Permissions and the Registered Local Coordinator

Under the Thailand Film Office process, a foreign production hires a local coordinator registered with the Film Office; that coordinator applies for the national film permit with the schedule, locations, supporting material and crew list, and represents the production to the authorities during and after the shoot. Larger productions need a registered company rather than an individual. Fixing support does not replace that role. What the fixer supplies is the location information the application depends on, exact sites, dates, access conditions and site-owner consents, and the on-the-ground coordination once permission is in hand.

Location-specific permissions are additional to the national approval. Sites controlled by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, the Department of National Parks, the Royal Forest Department, the Forest Industry Organization or the Fine Arts Department carry their own conditions and timing, confirmed with the controlling authority. The fixer coordinates site access within those conditions; approval itself, and its timing, rests with the authorities and the registered coordinator’s application.

Thailand Film Fixer Support: Crew, Equipment and Transport

Within an agreed scope, a Thailand film fixer books local crew by department to the visiting heads, coordinates rental equipment against the DOP’s list and the dates, arranges drivers and unit vehicles, books accommodation near the work, and plans unit movements between locations. Bookings are confirmed for the specific dates before the producer is told they are in place, and every commitment is placed by the party agreed in the scope. Where the unit brings its own equipment, the fixer coordinates arrival, transfer and return on the ground; the customs and temporary-admission route itself is confirmed with the registered coordinator and the freight agent.

Bangkok and Regional Location Logistics

The recce questions change with the territory. These are the checks the fixing team runs before a location is confirmed, framed as checks rather than promised capabilities.

  • Bangkok: Can the unit load and hold near the location? Can filming proceed around normal trading and pedestrian activity? Who controls the specific site, and what does the metropolitan administration require for it?
  • Island and coastal locations (Phuket, Krabi, Phang Nga): Where can people and equipment embark and unload? What shelter, power and return-transfer arrangements need checking? Which park or marine conditions apply to the site and the season?
  • Northern locations (Chiang Mai and beyond): Which crew and equipment can be sourced locally, and what must travel? What access, road and accommodation constraints affect the unit, and does the season affect air and light?
  • Heritage locations (Ayutthaya, Sukhothai and other historical parks): Which proposed camera positions, equipment, holding areas and working hours need site approval from the Fine Arts Department, and where does the unit base nearby?

Arrival and Daily Shoot Support

The fixer meets the unit on arrival, moves cast and crew to the hotel and walks the key creatives through the first location. Entry, work-authorisation and customs formalities are confirmed in advance with the registered coordinator and the relevant authorities; the fixer coordinates the ground side of arrival and does not control those outcomes. During the shoot the fixer works to the assistant director’s call sheet: locations opened and ready within their access windows, site managers and any authority representatives met, movement updates as the day changes, and on-ground problems, from a lost location to a weather move, handled within the agreed scope. Anything that affects budget or schedule beyond the day is escalated to the producer or the line producer immediately.

Local Fixing or Full Line Production?

Local fixing support in Thailand is access-led: a unit that arrives with its own producer, heads of department and budget authority hires the fixer for locations, permissions coordination, crew, transport and shoot-day support. The fixer may operate an agreed operating allowance for local costs, reconciled against records; that is not ownership of the production budget. Full line production is financial and production management: the budget held and reported, vendor contracts placed, the schedule sequenced across legs and the whole below-the-line operation carried from prep to wrap. That is the line producer Thailand service, with the fixing team working inside it. On a larger shoot the two are layers, not alternatives.

How a Thailand Fixing Engagement Runs

  • Brief: format, dates, locations or looks, unit size, travelling crew, equipment and any special access requirements.
  • Feasibility assessment: whether the locations and dates are realistic, which permissions they trigger, and what the registered coordinator will need.
  • Agreed scope and fees: what the fixing team delivers, what the visiting team keeps, the operating allowance if any, and the reporting expected.
  • Recce and coordination: sites assessed and confirmed, access terms documented, crew, equipment, transport and accommodation booked for the dates.
  • Shoot support: arrival, daily ground operations and movement updates, with escalation to the producer for anything beyond the day.
  • Expense records and handover: agreed expense records, locations released, vendors settled, equipment returned, and the file handed to the producer.

Discuss Your Thailand Shoot

Share your shoot dates, location references, unit size and the support you need on the ground. Include any boat work, night filming, restricted-site access or travelling equipment so these can be considered at the outset. We can assess the brief and propose an appropriate fixing scope.
